IMDB
Internet Movie Database has the largest collection of film trivia and information. Aside from DVD movie reviews, you can also view a film's cast and crew, credits, actor and director interviews, as well as the movie's script. IMDB's movie reviews are written by its community of users. Each review is also rated by others so readers can get a sense of whether this review was helpful for others, too. Aside from reviews, IMDB also feature a film synopsis.
Rotten Tomatoes
At rottentomatoes.com, DVD movie reviews are written by certified critics from all around the world. To be a critic one has to either be employed as a professional critic by a publishing company and/or be published online with a website that gets a large volume of traffic. Movie ratings are averaged from all critics who write a review of a particular movie and the total or the average score is what is shown as the movie's rating. This total is shown in percentages. While considered to be the most authoritative source of movie reviews, Rotten Tomatoes has been proven by and large to be elitist and disconnected from regular viewer's tastes. As such, only intellectuals and film buffs depend on the website's reviews when it comes to choosing DVDs to buy.
Roger Ebert
Roger Ebert is a well known movie critic who has his own movie review site. Unlike rotten tomatoes, his site rates movies from a 1-5 star rating scale. Also including a brief summary of each film, Roger Ebert distinguishes his reviews by mentioning other films similar to the one being reviewed. Readers may then be able to base their movie choices on whether or not they liked the other movie mentioned or not.
Community Websites and Movie Forums
There are a growing number of forums and community sites dedicated to movie reviews and films in general. These sites are often niche in nature; only catering to users with the same tastes in movies. Social networking sites have also started featuring their own movie review services. MySpace have tools which allow users to rate and review their favorite movies, and also see what others like. Film buffs often have their own forums where they can discuss each movie's details in general. These sites often feature a movie of the month or an editor's pick or forum selection of the week. Another source of good reviews are blogs. In blogs, writers often tackle a movie in detail, and will often review not only the movie's story in general but also the acting and directing in the film.
Finding DVD movie reviews nowadays isn't that hard. All one needs to know is a movie's title and add "review/s" in the search phrase. While there are certain websites which users will eventually depend on as their primary source for movie reviews, it's still a good idea especially when just starting out to try out each site and find out which one fits when it comes to your personal taste in movies.
