Originally a small fishing village, Coco, with its beautiful sand beach, has rapidly turned into a favorite getaway destinations for many Costa Ricans, and is now among the most famous beaches of Costa Rica. Although it has become a top beach destination, Playa del Coco has managed to retain its authentic feel as locals still live from fishing.
On weekends this place is a popular destination for Costa Ricans and you will see the roads and the beach fill with "Ticos", barbeques and picnic baskets in hands. This area consists of a horseshoe-shaped bay with steep hills and impressive cliffs, making for a true natural heaven for everyone looking to get away from town for the weekend.
Ranked as one of the best tourist destinations as well for its excellent infrastructure which comprises myriad hotels, restaurants, bars and casino, Playa del Coco is the perfect destination if you are looking for authenticity combined with lots of entertainment opportunities. Nightlife on the beach and in the many resorts and discotheques around is particularly lively, so night owls rest assured, you will not be bored!
Located near the Gulf of Papagayo, the beautiful beach is very easily accessible and only 40 minute drive from the airport in Liberia. It was at first a favorite spot among surfers who used it as a gateway to reach Ollie& Point and Witches Rock where waves are amazing. Playa del Coco is also a great spot for scuba diving. Many diving companies are established in the area so you can easily organize your diving excursions directly on the beach.
From Playas del Coco you can also organize a trip to Pelonas Islands, Catalinas and Bat Islands which are excellent sites to spot turtles, sharks and octopuses in their natural environment. No Costa Rica vacations can be complete without a stopover at Playa del Coco!
